Today we’re shooting a VFR ILS approach to BTP RWY 8 with the assistance of Pittsburgh ATC using the Lance’s original Altimatic IIIc Autopilot and steam gauges. The VFR ILS is an option every VFR pilot has, but is seldom utilized. You do not need a CFII or a safety pilot to do this as long as you maintain VFR, and although it doesn’t count as IFR training, it’s a good tool to have in your toolbox. It probably also helps with “for real” IFR training down the road.
